As I researched the origin of scissors, it reminded me that I had been wondering who invented cookies. I did not save the source for the following information. Information is so ephemeral these days. 

Cookies were originally invented as small cakes used to test oven temperatures. Their history dates back to the 7th century in Persia, where sugar was cultivated and used in baking. This practice spread to Europe through various cultural exchanges, including the Muslim conquest of Spain.

The term "cookie" became popular in American English by the 18th century. In many English-speaking countries, cookies are often referred to as "biscuits," particularly when they are crisp.
