my mailbox

this one is from my newest penpal. not only did she find me on the internet, she came all the way to iowa, from new jersey to see me. i guess there was also a family reunion in some small iowa town. it was fun to meet carrie and find out that she is a closet artist. as soon as i finish the 500 envelopes that i need to address, stamp, stuff and mail, i will start on my blog tutorials for carrie. she has been painting these labyrinths for a while in gouache, so she's already familiar with one of our favorite mediums.

  1. Beautiful envelope! I especially love the theme you have going with the heart on the stamp and the heart at the center of the labyrinth. And this brown. Wow. Gorgeous.

  2. the first thing, carrie, is that no one can spell a name here
the prime thing is that you found the right place
your design has a lot of subtle wit such as the queen looking at the opening of the maze that conceals a golden heart
    jean you're amazing
    as is jackie
    and carrie

  3. Yeah, that gaze between the queen and the hidden heart is wonderful - & my eye just keeps bouncing back and forth between those two hearts. I'll never get tired of looking at this envelope. Thanks for sharing! And Kat(h)y, who is also amazing, noticed right off that I didn't even attempt to spell your name. BTW, K/T, when are you going to show us all the stuff you've been doing with those gigantic brushes you bought in Chicago?

  4. Thanks everyone! If you're going to be saying such nice things, please go ahead and spell my name any way you like!

  6. I am on a real kick with this, it started about 6 weeks ago. Before that I had just drawn them and made a few lifesize walkable ones with lime on grass. I recently found out there is a chartres-style one in a churchyard in my town, made of bricks inlaid in the grass. It's a 9-11 memorial that actually has a chunk of I-beam from the WTC in the center. It would be a beautiful meditation spot but is almost completely overgrown, so you cannot really walk it. I was inspired to learn the pattern so I could go and fix it for them. A bit of guerilla gardening. (As if my own garden didn't need some attention). In any case, these highly structured patterns have a lot of appeal for me.

  7. and we need to form a support group for paul. now that carrie is running with the scribes, he might need to adjust his expectations. note to carrie: be sure to send paul some mail at the office. he'll appreciate it.

  8. Good thinking. He is a schooteacher and home til after Labor Day, but could still send some from my office to him.
